My Top 5 Favourite Novels Set in WWI - A Guest Post by The Savvy Reader

1. The Cove by Ron Rash -- This is a beautifully written and raw story about a love affair doomed in the rising turmoil of WWI.

2. My Dear I Wanted to Tell You by Louisa Young – The dramatic story of two love stories, intertwined and changed by the First World War.

3. Passchendaele by Paul Gross – Passchendaele, one of the most horrific battles of WWI, was also the scene of Allied victory, a triumph carried by Canadians, and one that helped form who we are as a nation. In a story of war, love, futility and sacrifice, Passchendaele reminds us of our country’s greatest strengths and our lasting achievements.

4. Deafening by Francis Itani -- Set on the eve of the Great War, Deafening spans two continents and the lives of a young deaf woman and her beloved husband. It’s a moving story that will stay with you long after you’ve put the book down.

5. The Passing Bells by Phillip Rock – Hey Downton Abbey fans, this one’s for you! This is the story of Abingdon Pryory, the elegant country home of the Grevilles—a titled English family who, along with their servants, see their world turned upside down when England goes to war.

There are so many amazing novels out there that give us an idea of what life was like during World War I.

These are just a few of my favourites!

  1. I've not read any of these books, but the WWI period is quickly becoming one of my favourites so these will all be going on my to tbr pile (except the Louisa Young book which is already on it).

I had no idea Paul Gross had written a novel about Passchendaele, although I am aware of the movie.

    Thanks for this post.
