After 3 years organizing the Historical Fiction Challenge, the girls of The Royal Reviews gracefully passed over this exciting event to our team at Historical Tapestry. We will do our best to continue doing a great job and create a wonderful place to share and discuss our favourite (and less favourite) historical fiction books for the next year.
Each month, a new post dedicated to the HF Challenge will be created. To participate, you only have to follow the rules:
- everyone can participate, even those who don't have a blog (you can add your book title and thoughts in the comment section if you wish)
- add the link(s) of your review(s) including your name and book title to the Mister Linky we’ll be adding to our monthly post (please, do not add your blog link, but the correct address that will guide us directly to your review)
- any kind of historical fiction is accepted (HF fantasy, HF young adult,...)
- you can overlap this challenge with others kind of challenges
- During these following 12 months you can choose one of the different reading levels:
- Severe Bookaholism: 20 books
- Undoubtedly Obsessed: 15 books
- Struggling the Addiction: 10 books
- Daring & Curious: 5 books
- Out of My Comfort Zone: 2 books
The challenge will run from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011.
Have fun everyone!
I am thinking this is one challenge I can handle with no problem :)
ReplyDeleteOnce again I shall be participating... as if I could ever not! I think Severe Bookaholisom and beyond pretty much sums it up, hehe. Thanks for taking over this challenge; I hope you have fun with it :)
ReplyDeleteNot really a challenge but can't miss out on the HT challenge so opting for Severe Bookaholism.
ReplyDeleteCount me in with all the fellow obsessed! Thanks for hosting it!
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely in. Severe Bookaholism won't be a problem for me :-)
ReplyDeleteGreat challenge! I'm in. Can the challenge overlap with other challenges?
ReplyDeleteHi, I'm Jenny and I'm a Bookaholic. Looks like I'm in good company!
ReplyDeleteThis may be the only challenge I join next year (since new baby will make things...hectic...lol) but I have to go for the Severe Bookaholism level again!
ReplyDeleteI'll be participating this year!
ReplyDeleteRosanne E. Lortz
I definitely think this is one challenge that I can do.
ReplyDeleteIrena, you can overlap this challenge with as many as you wish.:)
ReplyDeleteI decided to participate too this year. My blog mostly has Portuguese posts but I'll publish the reviews in English. Thanks for hosting this! :-)
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to start this one! :)
ReplyDeleteYou ladies will do a fantastic job and keep this challenge exciting and interesting! Have fun everyone and Merry Christmas!
ReplyDeleteI think I will join too. I love read Historical Fiction but only managed one this year!!! This challenge should help me scoot some more in with 2011
ReplyDeleteCarolNWong(at)aol(dot)com
This challenge should be a breeze! :)
ReplyDeleteShooting for Severe Bookaholism.
Are cross-overs permitted? This is a tempting challenge.
ReplyDeleteThanks
Just wondering - how far back does something have to be to be "historical"? Is early 20th century allowed? Late 20th century? What's the cut-off date? Thanks! Eibhlin
ReplyDeleteRegarding formats: I'm going to assume ebooks are acceptable.
ReplyDeleteWhat about audiobooks?
I loves historical fiction! Read it, write it, dream it. Sign me on at the "Struggling the Addiction" level. Well, because I'm supposed to write at least one novel this year ...
ReplyDeleteKudos to Christy at Readin' & Dreamin' for the heads up about this challenge. :)
Just found you, and I signed up. Thanks for the link-up!
ReplyDeleteThis should be fun. I'm signing up at the Daring & Curious level. Thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to this challenge. I love historical fiction!
ReplyDeleteThanks for this! It's my first Challenge! I think I am going to hover between "Curious & Daring" and "Struggling the Addiction"...
ReplyDeleteI truly love historical fiction, but I get distracted by book club selections and other reading challenges, so I'm going to sign up as "Daring and Curious" -- although i would like to go with "Struggling the Addiction" -- so that I can possibly complete the challenge. If I read more...well, that would be great, wouldn't it?
ReplyDeleteThanks for taking over this challenge!
Never done challenges before but though I'd give this atry :)
ReplyDeleteHistorical fiction is my favorite genre! I'm looking forward to the challenge.
ReplyDeleteGlad to see you hosting this one, I'll be back to Mr Linky as soon as I've done my post :)
ReplyDeleteMy post is now linked :)
ReplyDeleteThanks for organizing this. I'll go for level 4, and will post later a list of books I intend to read for this Challenge. Emma @ Words And Peace
ReplyDeleteI'm trying for Daring & Curious

Just signed up thanks to Laurel Ann's post at Austenprose: http://booktalkandmore.blogspot.com/2010/12/historical-fiction-reading-challenge.html
ReplyDeleteOh, gosh. I really didn't want to do any more challenges in 2011, but I literally posted a request on my blog about two weeks ago for recommendations of good historical fiction and/or non-fiction, as I've become very interested in the genre recently. I've read a lot of entertaining historical fiction, but what I love most is the educational value they have.
ReplyDeleteSo... okay... I'm signed up! :)
Please, count me in.
ReplyDeleteGreetings,
Tiina
Thank you for hosting this challenge, and please count me in.
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to this challenge. Thanks for hosting it!
ReplyDeleteJules
Can't wait for this one to start. Love historical fiction.
ReplyDeleteKat
Looking forward to the challenge, and to also wee what others are reading. No idea on what level I shall strive for, as you know what happens to plans! It always turns out that someone is laughing, and if I can make it me, so much the better!
ReplyDeleteThanks for the challenge!
I don't usually read historical fiction but I've been wanting to give it a try. This challenge should help me keep to my goals. :-)
ReplyDeleteI am definitely addicted. One question: What counts as Historic?
ReplyDeleteI am entranced by Elizabeth Jane Howard's Cazelet series which I'm reading for the third time. Does WWII count as historic? (If so, I guess I'm historic too, since I was born in 1942 :) )
I love when a storm of clicking through book blogs leads me to something like this! Awesome.
ReplyDeleteAllie
This sounds like fun. Count me in for at least 10 book reviews this year (although I mean to post one per month).
ReplyDeleteI'm very excited for this challenge, thanks for hosting!
ReplyDeleteI love Historical Fiction, so why not join a challenge!? I'm so glad I found your blog and thank you for hosting the challenge! Will be posting about the challenge in the coming weeks and will come back and have Mr. Linky link me up!
ReplyDeleteSuzanne
Chick with Books
This sounds like a great challenge. I don't have a blog, but will link to my Goodreads review. I'm going for Daring and Curious level.

ReplyDeletemy sign-up post
I ADORE historical fiction, so I was thrilled to see this post. :) I'm in for Bookaholism for sure!
ReplyDeleteI'm in!
ReplyDeleteI'm back! And I'm in the challenge for the Severe Bookaholism level! See my post here: http://historicalfictionnotebook.blogspot.com/2010/12/reading-challenges.html
ReplyDeleteI'm really looking forward to this challenge!
ReplyDeletePretty much all I read is HF. I prefer YA, Georgette Heyer style regencies and Austenesque novels.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time participating in the challenge and I'm excited! Thanks for hosting and Happy New Year!!!
ReplyDeleteI am here via christina_reads
ReplyDeleteThis looks like a challenge to read what I'd likely be reading anyway!
I'm also doing a challenge of my own. I'm using the books I read to raise money for my library.
I think I will fall in the severe bookaholic class with no problems, and historical fiction is my favorite genre. I hope 20th Century also qualifies as HF....
ReplyDeleteAnd me, but only at daring & curious level, I think.
ReplyDeletehttp://brideofthebookgod.wordpress.com/2011/01/02/historical-fiction-challenge-2011/
My first one of the year (which is an excellent book!):
ReplyDelete1. - Work Song by Ivan Doig
"There are moments in a lifetime when you can taste history as it is happening. When the flavor of time, from one hour to the next, somehow is not quite the same as any day before. So it was, at the start of the intense summer of 1919, as the miners of Butte and the mining corporation cooked up strategies against each other. Dickens should have been living in this hour to tell the ale of the two cities, the one of the neighborhoods of the Hill, and the other of the tall offices downtown, in the double-numbered year."
Wow--love this--I'm in for the Severe level as I just read THE EXILE by Diana Gabaldon last night (I assume graphic novels count?) so that means I only have 19 more to go, LOL...
ReplyDeleteI'll be posting about the challenge on my blog tomorrow, but I'm gonna link my first review thru Mr. Linky (I reviewed THE EXILE as part of my 100+ Challenge; hope that's okay?)
I am very excited about this one. I decided to do the "Struggling the Addiction" level to not overwhelm myself. Love the genre, really should read more. And I just finished my first book for the challenge. Once the January review page is up, I'll link it there.
ReplyDeleteI just found out about the challenge from Svea at Muse in the Fog.
ReplyDeleteI'm definitely in for 20+!
I'm in! Thanks for hosting this great challenge.
ReplyDeleteThis looks to be a good challenge. I hope readers become interested in my book, Polyxena, and please feel free to visit the blog and share some comments with me, I'll be sure to do the same!
ReplyDeleteI just signed up and included my blogs main link, I will blog about this this week... I did add it to my challenge page. please do not remove me from the challenge. :)
ReplyDeleteWhat the heck. I'll try it out.
ReplyDeleteI'll go for Undoubtedly Obsessed, because it seems doable. We'll see if I'm right.
Finally a New Year's resolution I can stick with all your long!!
ReplyDeleteOK, I'm choosing severe bookaholism!
ReplyDeleteI'm already one down....
The Sleepwalkers by Paul Grossman
Historical fiction is one of my favorite genres! Can't wait to start!
ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction, too, but mine will concentrate on mysteries and crime fiction. I'll probably read more than 10, but I'm signing up for so many challenges that I'm going to put myself in the "struggling" category.
ReplyDeleteFabulous. Consider me afflicted with "severe bookaholism"!
ReplyDeleteThought I'd start with 5 and maybe work my way up. Just started my own book blog so excited to add reviews and explore different genres
ReplyDeleteExcellent idea - I signed up
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I'm also doing Austenprose's Sense and Sensibility Challenge, but I think I can manage the level of Daring and Curious here, at least.
ReplyDeleteI think I should be able to manage at least 2-3 books on this one--LOVE historic fiction! :)
ReplyDeleteSigning on for the Struggling with Addiction. I used to love Historical Fiction, it'll be nice to get into the genre again.
ReplyDeleteThis sounds alluring! Do Historical Fiction also include novels in which the story takes place in early 20th century? Is there a deadline like: after 1974/ 1813/2009 etc. it isn't historical anymore? I don't want to set my goal to high.. ;")
ReplyDeleteCount me in! I'll be "struggling the addiction..."
ReplyDeleteVery excited to start another challenge!I'll probably be somewhere between "struggling the addiction" and "undoubtedly obsessed".
ReplyDeleteSo, count me in! I am heading for Struggling the Addiction. :") Good luck and tons of fun to every participant!!! :")
ReplyDeleteThis is SO my genre!! LOL I LOVE HF and just can't seem to get enough of it. I don't have a blog, but would love to join in on this one as undoubtedly obsessed.
ReplyDeleteI don't often do challenges, but I love reading historical fiction so I think I shall do this one. Looking forward to it!
ReplyDeleteThanks so much for hosting a great reading challenge! I'm so excited! I just added my Mr. Linky link!
ReplyDeleteI'm so excited about this! Historical fiction has long been one of my favorite types of books.
ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction. I'm aiming to read 15.
ReplyDeleteI love Historical Fiction as well. Might I am for the big 15? I think I shall!
ReplyDeleteIn am In..!
ReplyDeleteYay! I'm in and SO excited:)
ReplyDeleteI am going to join this challenge too. It will probably be my only one this year but it is right up my alley!
ReplyDeleteWonderbar! The past is present.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time participating in this one so I am excited!
ReplyDeleteI am participating for the first time as well. Thanks for this challenge and thanks to Jo Jo for letting me know about it!
ReplyDeleteSuper excited about this challenge. Thanks for hosting :)
ReplyDeleteI'm signing up at the Daring& Curious level, but I hope to be able to read more than 5 books.
ReplyDeleteWill be coming back here for recommendations on what else I can add to my list!
Really looking forward for this one! I am signing up for the Severe Bookaholism level I love historical fiction and this one ties in well with the other challenges I have enrolled in. Will soon put up a post on my blog. http://nehasbookshelf.blogspot.com/
ReplyDeleteI'd like to echo the question that's been asked several times: what books are eligible as 'historical'? Also, does this include books written at the time the story takes place (e.g. in the 1800s) or only historical fiction by present-day authors?
ReplyDeleteI'm determined to stick to some reading challenges this year, and this has to be at the top of my list. Can't wait. :)
ReplyDeleteOk, I'm going to try for Undoubtedly Obsessed: 15 books
ReplyDeleteThis is my first ever challenge! I'm going for the Daring and Curious level! Thank you for hosting!
ReplyDeleteThis is my favorite genre - I can't wait to read and share reviews!
ReplyDeleteI love historical fiction. This is one challenge I definitely have to participate in!
ReplyDeleteThis looks like an awesome challenge! Signing up for the Undoubtebly Obssessed level.
ReplyDeleteI think I can do this challenge well. Here goes!
ReplyDeleteSounds fun!
ReplyDeleteI'm in as a severe bookaholic! Can't wait to share this wonderful year with you all :)
ReplyDeleteI'm late, but I'm in (as a Severe Bookaholic).
ReplyDeleteeven though I am quite a few days into the challenge, I will still like to participate as a Severe Bookaholic.
ReplyDeleteI'm committing to Severe Bookaholic!
ReplyDeleteI'm going for Undoubtedly Obsessed.
ReplyDeleteI signed up on 5 Jan... and my name was in the list above, but I noticed that it's no longer there... Not sure why??
ReplyDeleteI read "The secret adventures of Charlotte Bronte" by Laura Joh Rowland. Since I don't have a blog, here's my review:
It was much better than I thought it would be... full of suspense and little twists here & there. The writer must've done quite a bit of research into the subject of China and the opium trade, which I had no idea was part of the plot of the story. I admit I did get a little bored with all of the info/history of the opium trade/wars, but there again, the author did her homework where that subject is concerned. I also liked the "letters" written by her siblings and how they tied in with the story, plus some of the banterings between Charlotte's character & those of her sisters. Wonderful job in her descriptions of locations and the people involved - made you feel like you were there watching it all in person. Overall good read and now looking forward to reading the sequel "Bedlam: The Further Secret Adventures of Charlotte Bronte".
I've signed on for Undoubtedly Obsessed, 15 or more books. I'm excited to join this year, it's my first time on this challenge. Thanks for hosting it!
ReplyDeleteI've signed up for Daring and Curious but maybe I'll be able to read more.
ReplyDeleteSeriously. Excited!
ReplyDeleteSigned up for the Bookaholic level :o)
Already finished my first book since sign up: The Unpleasantness as Scargrave Manor by Stephanie Barron. Excellent book, excellent knowledge of Regency History.
ReplyDeleteThis is my first time and cant wait to start!
ReplyDeleteThis comment has been removed by the author.
ReplyDeleteI'm in...I knew I wouldn't be able to resist. :) But I already made my first Mr. Linky mistake and linked to my blog's main page. I'm going to put the banner with the proper link in my sidebar.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea!
ReplyDeleteI don't see my name on the list yet, but I just finished my second book for the Challenge. The first was Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor and the second was Jane and the Man of the Cloth, both by Stephanie Barron, both great.
ReplyDeleteHere's my 2nd book: Bedlam: the further secret adventures of Charlotte Bronte by Laura Joh Rowland. I read this as soon as I finished the first book in this series, and have to say that I really enjoyed it! The story line was quite a different scene compared to the first one, but it still had those twists & turns to the story that just pulled you in and made you wonder "what's next?". I loved the "love-hate" relationship between Charlotte & John Slade, and also Charlotte's determination to find him even after she was told that he was a dead traitor! The writer made her quite the feisty character and I felt like I could really "see" her as she searched to find the answers, and the man, she was looking for. Great descriptions of the locations Charlotte traveled to... and I'm seriously hoping that the author will continue with more books in this series. Giving this 3.5 stars!!
ReplyDeleteI'm looking forward to learning about a lot of new books to enjoy!
ReplyDeleteFinished my third and fourth books- Georgette Heyer's "The Reluctant Widow"
ReplyDeleteand "For You Alone" by Susan Kaye
I've signed up, this is my first book challenge and I'm really excited.
ReplyDeleteGreat idea! I can't believe I didn't read any historical fiction in 2010... *hangs head in shame*
ReplyDeleteI'm a total history junkie. I am loving this challenge!
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to start, sounds like fun!

I'm very excited to be joining this challenge!! I can't wait to get started on my 20 books!
ReplyDeleteI tend to read mostly historical fiction anyway, so this is perfect for me. I'll try for as many as I can. :)
ReplyDeleteWish I found out about this sooner! It's going to be a lot of fun!
ReplyDeleteI am definately going for "Severe Bookaholism." So many good titles, I cannot wait to get started!!
ReplyDeleteI have posted my third review for this challenge on my blog http://7hills.blogspot.com today
ReplyDeleteIt is 'Vienna' written by Eva Menasse
- a 20th century saga of a half-Jewish Viennese family living in
austria, England and Canada told as a fictional memoir.
You can leave the links of your reviews at each month challenge post. The January Historical Fiction Reading Challenge is already up and you can find it here:

ReplyDeleteLove to read HF! What's the first book?
ReplyDeleteI have no idea how this happened...I thought I added myself to the linky when I first joined the challenge, but it turns out that I did not. Well, I'm there now!
ReplyDeleteI was sure I had also added myself to the linky, but perhaps not!
ReplyDeleteHi, I just joined the challenge. Hope it;s not too late.
ReplyDeletePlease ignore the linky no. 193. I entered the wrong link. So so sorry.

ReplyDeletehttp://ladydoc-tiltingatwindmills.blogspot.com/2011/02/historical-fiction-reading-challenge.html
This is going to be GREAT fun!
This is my 3rd review:
ReplyDelete**Really enjoying this challenge, by the way :)
I just finished reading "Romancing Miss Bronte" by Juliet Gael:
What a wonderful story!! I was easily pulled into the story, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike the other 2 Bronte books I read recently, this is not a mystery-type story. It is more true to who I believe Charlotte Bronte was in real life, even though this is an HF book. I think the author did a wonderful job of portraying Charlotte & the lives of her sisters, brother & father... and her developing relationship with her husband. Very sad the loss & turmoil she & her family suffered in their lives. She lost so much, but loved even greater. I borrowed this book, but I think I'm going to have to get a copy for my own personal library! Great book!!
Just finished reading Susan Vreeland's "Clara and Mr. Tiffany." I found it fascinating, with as much about turn-of-the-century New York as about Clara Driscoll and the contribution she made to the decorative arts and the famous Tiffany lamps and glass windows. Ms. Vreeland has written a number of novels about artists where her presentation of the culture and period as her portrait of the artist. I learned a great deal reading this book, and enjoyed it thoroughly.
ReplyDeleteHi girls...I didn't see the February link to post, so here is my first February book. http://bookwormsdinner.blogspot.com/2011/02/review-fort-by-bernard-cornwella-novel.html
ReplyDeleteBernard Cromwell is the best! This one takes you to Penebscot Bay during the Revolutionary War.
I'm in! History is my favorite so when I do choose fiction historical is the way I usually go. I can do 20, I'm sure of it.
ReplyDeleteTook me forever to get my list together but here it is...
ReplyDeletehttp://citivolussus.blogspot.com/2011/02/one-more-reading-challenge-for-2011.html
Looking forward to the challenge and discovering lots of new books to add to my to-be-read list.
Jj
I have been waiting for someone to organize this challenge again. I am joining at the Struggling with Addiction level of participation and am sooooo excited about the challenge.
ReplyDeleteAh! I could have sworn that I officially signed up weeks ago, but better late than never. :)
ReplyDeleteHere is my start-up: http://liedermadchen.blogspot.com/2011/02/historical-fiction-reading-challenge.html
I'm also joining the challenge. I posted about this on http://gianfaye.wordpress.com/2011/03/08/reading-challenges-for-2011/
ReplyDeleteCheers,
Gian Faye
So far I have read 2 books towards my 15: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and Memoirs Of A Geisha by Arthur Golden. Both were amazing.
ReplyDeleteI'm doing this! Almost all I read are HF books :P I'm going for the high level--Severe Bookaholism. I've read a few already this year before this, but since I wasn't part of the challenge then I won't count those. Currently reading two right now--I think I can hit 20 easily! :)
ReplyDeleteWill post a blog badge here soon!
I've decided to jump into this reading challenge since I am a big fan of historical fiction. I am going to pick level 3 struggling the addiction.
ReplyDeleteCarrie
Severe Bookaholism for me.
ReplyDeleteThis look like fun so I'm jumping right in.
ReplyDeleteI will be going for the "Struggling the Addiction" level. Maybe I'll get more than 10 in.
I'll take the challenge! Sounds fun, and it's right up my alley...
ReplyDeletehttp://ireadthatonce.blogspot.com/
My first Challenge! I'm going go for Struggling the Addiction.
ReplyDeleteI love Historical Fiction but I found that I only own 5 YA Historical Fiction/Fantasy books :( is it fine?
ReplyDeleteCan't wait to get started on this challenge. I am going to try for Struggling the Addiction.
ReplyDeleteA bit late, but I want to challegne myself to. I have a homepage written in norwegian, where i post reviews of books I have read. Sorry its not in english... :/ But we luckily got Google Translate if anyone is interested :)
ReplyDelete10 books for me.
Will the April link up be up soon?
ReplyDeleteI am signing up late but I love history so much that this is going to be wonderful!
ReplyDeleteOk I hope I posted my blog/review link in the right place. I just finished A Beautiful Blue Death for the reading challenge and I posted a link to my blog/post in the Mr Linky but not sure if I put it in the right place. I finished my book on 5/2/11 (not sure if that's important or not) and here is the link to my blog...if I posted in the wrong place....my bad!!!
ReplyDeleteAlright a nice easy read but not something I hadn't read before....but still I love the historic period and the concept so I did like the book and will likely read the others in the series.
See my full review here: http://www.thelitbitch.com/?p=1251
Signing up late, too, but I want to make sure we beat last month's numbers!
ReplyDeleteI'll post my May reviews at the May post.
Signing up late..
ReplyDeleteI am signing up late but have already read 8 HF books so I'm confident I can reach 20.
ReplyDeleteI'm coming in late also. I've read a few historical fictions already, so I think I can do it easily!
ReplyDeleteI am a bit late too! I will get through as many as I can! I am just about to finish one, so that's better than nothing!
ReplyDeleteSince I am late to this challenge, I will only do 4 books until the end of the years.
ReplyDeleteI have completed the challenge at 10 books. My summary post is here
ReplyDeleteI am a Reading Challenge Virgin and I look upon this decision with eagerness and bit of anxiety! I do not know why I haven't done this in the past as reading is my calling in life and as an English teacher I have no excuse either. I'll be telling my students about this and they will keep me honest!!
ReplyDeleteHere's my wrap-up post: http://www.howmysterious.com/2011/12/17/completed-challenge-historical-fiction-reading-challenge/
ReplyDeleteAre you running this for 2012? I read a lot of HF in 2011, but didn't know about this! Would love to do it for 2012.
ReplyDeleteliteraryhoarders@wordpress.com
Finished my Challenge
ReplyDeletehttp://raymentsreadingsrantsandramblings.blogspot.com/2011/12/historical-fiction-challenge-completed.html
I'm going to start small this year with five books. You can find me and my reviews - once I begin the challenge proper - at http://victorianlibrarian.wordpress.com/the-historical-fiction-reading-challenge-2012/.

ReplyDelete
