Each month, a new post dedicated to the HF Challenge will be created. To participate, you only have to follow the rules:
- everyone can participate, even those who don't have a blog (you can add your book title and thoughts in the comment section if you wish)
- add the link(s) of your review(s) including your name and book title to the Mister Linky we’ll be adding to our monthly post (please, do not add your blog link, but the correct address that will guide us directly to your review)
- any kind of historical fiction is accepted (HF fantasy, HF young adult,...)
- you can overlap this challenge with others kind of challenges
- During these following 12 months you can choose one of the different reading levels:
- Severe Bookaholism: 20 books
- Undoubtedly Obsessed: 15 books
- Struggling the Addiction: 10 books
- Daring & Curious: 5 books
- Out of My Comfort Zone: 2 books
The challenge will run from 1 January 2011 to 31 December 2011.

I really didn't want to do any more challenges in 2011, but I literally posted a request on my blog about two weeks ago for recommendations of good historical fiction and/or non-fiction, as I've become very interested in the genre recently. Wow--love this--I'm in for the Severe level as I just read THE EXILE by Diana Gabaldon last night (I assume graphic novels count?) so that means I only have 19 more to go, LOL...

ReplyDeleteI read "The secret adventures of Charlotte Bronte" by Laura Joh Rowland. Since I don't have a blog, here's my review:
It was much better than I thought it would be... full of suspense and little twists here & there. The writer must've done quite a bit of research into the subject of China and the opium trade, which I had no idea was part of the plot of the story. I admit I did get a little bored with all of the info/history of the opium trade/wars, but there again, the author did her homework where that subject is concerned. I also liked the "letters" written by her siblings and how they tied in with the story, plus some of the banterings between Charlotte's character & those of her sisters. Wonderful job in her descriptions of locations and the people involved - made you feel like you were there watching it all in person. Overall good read and now looking forward to reading the sequel "Bedlam: The Further Secret Adventures of Charlotte Bronte".

ReplyDeleteI don't see my name on the list yet, but I just finished my second book for the Challenge. The first was Jane and the Unpleasantness at Scargrave Manor and the second was Jane and the Man of the Cloth, both by Stephanie Barron, both great.
ReplyDeleteHere's my 2nd book: Bedlam: the further secret adventures of Charlotte Bronte by Laura Joh Rowland. I read this as soon as I finished the first book in this series, and have to say that I really enjoyed it! The story line was quite a different scene compared to the first one, but it still had those twists & turns to the story that just pulled you in and made you wonder "what's next?". I loved the "love-hate" relationship between Charlotte & John Slade, and also Charlotte's determination to find him even after she was told that he was a dead traitor! The writer made her quite the feisty character and I felt like I could really "see" her as she searched to find the answers, and the man, she was looking for. Great descriptions of the locations Charlotte traveled to... and I'm seriously hoping that the author will continue with more books in this series. Giving this 3.5 stars!!

I just finished reading "Romancing Miss Bronte" by Juliet Gael:
What a wonderful story!! I was easily pulled into the story, and thoroughly enjoyed it. Unlike the other 2 Bronte books I read recently, this is not a mystery-type story. It is more true to who I believe Charlotte Bronte was in real life, even though this is an HF book. I think the author did a wonderful job of portraying Charlotte & the lives of her sisters, brother & father... and her developing relationship with her husband. Very sad the loss & turmoil she & her family suffered in their lives. She lost so much, but loved even greater. I borrowed this book, but I think I'm going to have to get a copy for my own personal library! Great book!!
Just finished reading Susan Vreeland's "Clara and Mr. Tiffany." I found it fascinating, with as much about turn-of-the-century New York as about Clara Driscoll and the contribution she made to the decorative arts and the famous Tiffany lamps and glass windows. Ms. Vreeland has written a number of novels about artists where her presentation of the culture and period as her portrait of the artist. I learned a great deal reading this book, and enjoyed it thoroughly.

So far I have read 2 books towards my 15: Snow Flower and the Secret Fan by Lisa See and Memoirs Of A Geisha by Arthur Golden. Both were amazing.
