Thursday Threads - Morland Series by Cynthia Harrod - Eagles

I have a pending house move and as a result I shall be having a bit of book cull. I noticed that on my pile of books to be read is the wonderful Morland series by Cynthia Harrod - Eagles.

I read the first book a few years ago as a taster and enjoyed it, and then preceeded to gather the rest in the series. Over time I have picked up a few books but do not have the complete series. The plan is to have a series read, (not until I have moved!). When I want to read a series of books I have to have at least the first 3 books, as I find nothing is more irritating that not having the next book as that interupts my reading flow. So the question this week is -

Has anyone else read this series and what do you think of it?

  1. I've read almost all of the Morland series and just loved them. It is nice to go in sequence but even if you don't they are wonderful historical fiction with always one predominant character in each story. I so loved the books.

  2. I just discovered this author myself & hadn't read any of her books yet, but this series really caught my attention, so I do have her on my to-read list. I'm like you in that I won't start reading a series unless I have several of the books in it so that as soon as I finish the first 1 or 2, I can continue on with the story instead of having to wait... and then forgetting what had happened previously.

  3. I haven't read any of them, but they've been on my to-read list for a while now. It just seems like such a daunting undertaking with so many books, but hopefully, I'm make it happen!

    1. I know it is quite a task, that many books, but it has to be done....eventually!

  4. This is good timing! I am currently in the middle of the seventh book in the series! I have really liked the way that the author has been able to use the cast of Morland's to show the major historical events in each era. I do find many of her female characters to be .... interesting! The author isn't afraid of showing the circle of life, of births and deaths.

I have also read her Russian trilogy and really liked those too!

    1. A Russian trilogy, I had not heard of those. Guess that is another 3 books on the library look list!

That is exactly why I liked the few books I have read, the link to regular people to major historical events.

  5. I accidently,at different times, read three of her more recent Morlands, then I went back to the beginning and read the first book with the plan to gradually work through the list. For anyone who likes historical fiction they are a must.

  6. I have read up until about...The Winding Road or The Dancing Years, at least. Very juicy and engrossing and believable, although there are a few times that the family and fortunes and house fall into such disrepair, it's so sad, especially when you think of how hard Eleanor and Paul and Nanette worked in the early generations.

Oddly enough, I read the majority of the series last year when I was moving, too.

    1. It must be something about blocking out the stress of packing and moving Melissa! - The events that are fictionalised could of course have happened to real people - yours or my ancestors - that is why I like them!

  7. I read the first three or four I think, and enjoyed them, but then I think Sourcebooks stopped re-issuing them and I forgot about them. I enjoyed the series and I actually thought of it recently too. Maybe I'll make it a goal for the future, to continue on.
I like how everything builds on previous books. Characters and feelings carry over from period to period.
