Thursday Threads

It's Thursday, so it's time for our regular Thursday Threads feature! Here's what we'd like to know this week:

What era or setting would you like to see more of in historical fiction?

Here are our responses:

Kelly: I always wished for more books set in WWI. I am happy that with the 100 year anniversary not too far away more books are appearing on the shelves. I always wished historical fiction was more branched out, though. There is a 'fad' and that is all you see. I start looking for the books that are different in that case. It doesn't  necessarily matter what. I just like things once in a while that haven't  been explored to death.

Nanette: I'd love to see more books set in ancient Rome or ancient Greece, and I've really enjoyed the few historical novels that I've read that are set in the Middle East, especially during the Middle Ages.

Marg: I am not sure that it is eras as a whole that I wish I could read more about. Instead it is individual figures from history. For example, it always surprises me that there is so little written about people like Catherine the Great, or Florence Nightingale. I think I would also love to read something about Prince Rupert of the Rhine.

  1. Like historical fiction of any era! WWI and II background is for me especially interesting and there is a wide range around as well.

  2. Nanette, Ann Chamberlin's The Woman at the Well might be of interest? It's set in Syria during the early years of Islam (7th century AD). It's a really enchanting story, and I learned a lot.

    1. Julie, that sounds like something that would be right up my alley. I already went to Amazon and sent a sample to my Kindle. Now to find the time to read...

  3. I'd like to see more non-romance historical novels set during the late Georgian and Regency periods of English history. My love of Downton Abbey also has me wishing for more historical fiction set in early 20th century England, particular in the years immediately before and during WWI. Lastly, it would be nice to see more historical fiction set in Canada.
