What are your favorite historical novels from your home country?

'The Frozen Heart' by Almudena Grandes, is a huge historical fiction novel that encompasses the period from the 2nd Republic to our days, paying special attention to the Civil War and the postwar years. It's a thrilling story of two families, intertwined by historical events, and its secrets have to be found by two of their members, who fall in love.
ReplyDeleteThere are some newer that I ought to read, but as a teenager I used to love "adventures for boys" by Jalmari Sauli. He wrote of several periods of war, adventure stories. Nuori Kijl (Young Kijl) is about a mansion owner who takes part in the "nuijasota", a rebellion against the king of Sweden in the turn of the 16th and 17th centuries. He falls in love with the daughter of the opposite side leader (the bad guy of the story). Amiraali Spoofin rumpalipoika (Admiral Spoof's drummer boy) is a story from the "Suomen sota" in 1808-09 in which Sweden lost Finland to Russia. It tells of a teenage boy that joins a partisan company.
ReplyDeleteI live in the United States and have read many great novels set at the time of the Civil War, such as Gone With the Wind. More recently I've read and thoroughly enjoyed a series of novels by Sara Donati: Into the Wilderness is the first one, and is the name of the series.

ReplyDeleteWell, if I don't count the Anne books or The Blue Castle by L.M. Montgomery (since many of those were written at the same time they're set in, and so can't really be counted as historicals) I'd have to say my favourite Canadian historical novels would be Mrs. Mike, by Benedict and Nancy Freedman--which is actually more a novelized biography, since it was based on the real life of a friend of theirs--about a young woman who marries a Mountie and builds a life with him in the wilderness; and Pride's Fancy, by Thomas H. Raddall, one of our greatest historical novelists--a tale of romance and adventure on land and on sea in the late 18th century.

Overall, I have to say my absolute favourite is Three Day Road by Joseph Boyden.
