One of the historical fiction crazes sweeping the nations is the very popular
Downton Abbey. In response to the craze, book companies have been recommending and publishing books to appeal to the fans. They think that the people that watch the show tend to be literary types and since we are all here, we thought we would share the article that was published in
The New York Times, in case you missed it. Be prepared to add to your TBR pile if the time period of the show appeals to you at all.

What books can you think of that were previously published and serve as good companion pieces to the popular show?
There are several novels around which fit well with the Downton Abbey theme- here are just a few off the top of my head and I'm sure others could add to the list:
ReplyDeleteMartin Davies "The Year After"
Isabel Colegate "The Shooting Party"
Jane Sanderson "Netherwood"
Beverlyy Hughesdon "Song of Songs'
E M Forster "Howards's End"
The Cazalet Chronicles by Elizabeth Jane Howard. I think the title of the first book was The Light Years
ReplyDeleteI've been looking for historical fiction books reminiscent of Downton Abbey, but I think I might also pick up a few non-fiction, too. Thanks for the link.
ReplyDeleteI missed this when it was on last year, and now i don't want to start watching the second season until I've seen the first.
ReplyDeleteI've read The Cazalet Chronicles and thought it was wonderful. I've also seen good reviews for Life Below Stairs.
I love Downtown Abbey! So excited for the new episode this week.
ReplyDeleteI was reading Kate Morton's, The House at Riverton when I watched the first episodes of the first series. The similarites were amazing and it was a great read too.
ReplyDeleteOK I am DYING to watch this series now!! I have heard such good things about it and I have decided I simply MUST get season one and watch it!! I can't wait till it comes out on DVD so I can watch it :)
ReplyDeleteDownton Abbey is excellent indeed. The story, the settings, the beauty of the images,... everything is perfect; top of the range(!). As to book recommendations, I gather a lot of us already know "The Remains of the Day" by Kazuo Ishiguro that became a great film with Emma Thompson and Anthony Hopkins. There is another excellent fiction about a butler : "Walking into the Night" by Olaf Olafsson. You should love it! It's great.
