Many condemned him for not marrying her but being as extravagant and thoughtless as they are, under the (huge) financial strain, how well could the marriage have lasted? The only part of his conduct I would criticise is keeping the whole thing a secret from Marianne Dashwood and letting her find out the way she did.Anonymousnoreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5944570901299649958.post-31021751461436616062010-03-13T20:50:28.514+00:002010-03-13T20:50:28.514+00:00A lovely post! When she allows a coarse character to speak for himself (John Thorpe being one example), he blackens his own character far more than he does that of whoever he's attempting to be witty about.Shayne Parkinsonhttps://www.blogger.com/profile/11071406385872399178noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-5944570901299649958.post-75897845935858962009-11-14T14:27:06.638+00:002009-11-14T14:27:06.638+00:00Great post! Some writers of Austen sequels are so enamored of the polite manners in her books that they forget how flawed even her most lovable characters are - she was an expert at gently dissecting bad behavior!Margaret D.http://www.historicalnovels.infonoreply@blogger.com
